British Airways,  also often referred to as BA, is considered to be the largest airline in the United Kingdom based purely on the size of its fleet and the number of international flights and destinations that it caters to. In Nigeria, the airline is a leading player in the business and first class market segment, generating the same amount of  revenue in one flight that Ethiopian Airlines makes in two flights to Nigeria.

Founded on 31 March 1974 BA currently operates from two main hubs; London Heathrow Airport and Gatwick, with regular flights to and from Lagos, Kano and Abuja. With a fleet size of 294 aircraft flying to 188 destinations, British Airways is the UK’s flag carrier.

British Airways History

In 1972 a British Airways Board was formed to effectively handle the operations of the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA) as well as two regional airlines, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines. In 1974 an amalgamation of the four airlines formed the state company British Airways. After 31 years of operation the airline was privatised and later acquired British Caledonian (1987), Dan-Air (1992) and British Midland International (2012). Sir John King was appointed chairman of a struggling British Airways in 1981, and is said to have been the driving force behind the airline becoming one of the most profitable in the world.

British Airways has a rich history of headlines, mergers, acquisitions and legal action in its wake. As the official airline partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games, BA flew the Olympic flame from Athens International Airport to RNAS Culdrose, gaining considerable international credibility for the airline.
