The Onitsha to Owerri route — South-East intra-regional corridor

The Onitsha to Owerri corridor connects the commercial centre of Anambra State with the capital of Imo State. The 180-kilometre journey runs south through the Igbo heartland via Nnewi (auto parts manufacturing centre), Ihiala, and Mbaise — or alternatively via the Owerri-Aba road approach. Standard travel time is 3-3.5 hours by direct bus or shared taxi and 2.5-3 hours by private car.

The corridor supports a steady mix of trader traffic between Onitsha Main Market and Owerri-area businesses, university traffic to Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) and Imo State University (IMSU), and family-visit traffic between Anambra and Imo State indigenes.

Distance, duration and route structure

Onitsha to Nnewi (30km, 30-45 minutes). Nnewi to Ihiala (40km, 45 minutes - 1 hour). Ihiala to Mbaise (60km, 1-1.5 hours). Mbaise to Owerri (50km, 1-1.5 hours).

Road condition is mixed — generally moderate with rough sections near Ihiala and Mbaise. The Onitsha-Owerri Federal Road has been subject to phased rehabilitation since 2020.

What this route enables

The corridor supports the auto parts trade between Nnewi manufacturers and Onitsha distributors — Nnewi is the largest concentration of auto parts manufacturing in West Africa. Trader traffic from Onitsha to Owerri retail markets is also substantial. The Christmas-NYE festive season sees heavy traffic as Imo State diaspora return home via Onitsha.
