Step-by-step

  1. Visit Peace Mass Transit's terminal, website, app

Most Nigerian bus operators support multiple booking channels: in-person at the terminal, via their mobile app, via their website.

  2. Choose departure terminal and destination

Pick the terminal you'll board from and your final destination. Many cities have multiple terminals — confirm which one your bus departs from.

  3. Pick date and departure time

Most bus operators have morning, mid-day and evening departures. Earlier departures are typically more reliable and arrive in daylight.

  4. Select a seat (if reservation supported)

Some operators allow online seat selection; others assign seats at the terminal. Front and middle-row seats are usually safer and more comfortable.

  5. Pay and collect your ticket

Pay via bank transfer, debit card or cash at the terminal. Always keep your booking reference SMS — that's your ticket.

About Peace Mass Transit

Peace Mass Transit (PMT), founded in Enugu in 1995 by Sam Maduka Onyishi, is the operator with the largest fleet on Nigerian intercity roads — over 1,500 vehicles in regular rotation. PMT competes on price and reach rather than polish: the fares are routinely the cheapest of any organised operator, the routes touch parts of the country that GIGM and GUO don\'t cover, and the frequency on flagship corridors is unmatched. For budget travellers, students, and anyone with flexible timing, PMT is the operator that wins on every economic dimension.

Typical Nigerian intercity operators run a mix of Toyota Hiace / Sienna minivans (12-16 seats) for short and medium-haul routes, and Marcopolo or Higer coaches (32-50 seats) for long-haul. Premium operators add reclining seats, individual reading lights, and USB ports. WiFi is uncommon on intercity buses — bring a mobile data plan.

Peace Mass Transit: The TravelReap Editor's Guide

Why PMT is genuinely the cheapest

PMT\'s pricing edge comes from scale. The company operates more than 70 terminals nationwide and runs its own vehicle servicing infrastructure, so per-trip costs are lower than competitors who outsource maintenance. Fares are typically 15-25% below GIGM and 5-10% below GUO on the same route. The trade-off is variance: the AC is unreliable on older units, departures slip during peak periods, and the boarding experience at major terminals can be chaotic. None of this is a deal-breaker if you are budget-focused and have flex on departure time.

PMT's national footprint

Enugu (Garki Motor Park) is the HQ and runs continuous rotations to Lagos, Abuja, Onitsha, and Port Harcourt. Lagos presence is split between Jibowu and Ajah. Abuja: Utako. Other primary stations include Aba, Umuahia, Awka, Owerri, Calabar, Ibadan, Akure, and Jos. PMT\'s reach into the North — Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola — is deeper than most competitors. Many secondary routes (Enugu→Maiduguri, Aba→Kaduna) are only viable on PMT or one or two smaller operators.

How to book PMT (and the website caveat)

PMT\'s website (peacegroup.ng) supports online booking but the user experience trails GIGM and ABC. Card payment occasionally fails — bank transfer is more reliable. WhatsApp at +234 803 535 0000 is staffed during business hours and is actually responsive for booking queries. Walk-in works at any PMT terminal, but at Garki, Jibowu, and Utako during peak hours you should arrive 45 minutes early to get a seat. PMT does not have a mobile app yet — the website is mobile-responsive.

Group and student discounts

PMT runs the most generous group-booking discount in the segment: groups of 8+ get 10% off, groups of 15+ get 15% off, plus a free seat for the group coordinator on bookings of 25+. Student discount is 10% with a valid school ID on intra-state routes, applied at the counter. NYSC corps members get 5% off year-round on presentation of their ID card. None of these are advertised online — you have to ask.

Cancellation, refunds, and the goodwill policy

Formal cancellation is 50% before 24 hours, non-refundable within 24 hours. In practice, PMT counter staff have wide discretion and will often reschedule or partially refund without applying the formal fee, especially for repeat customers who can show prior bookings. Refunds are processed weekly in batches — expect 7-10 days for card refunds to settle, longer for bank transfers.

Editor's verdict

PMT is the budget traveller\'s default operator across most of Nigeria. The price advantage is real and consistent, the route coverage is unmatched, and the underlying service is reliable enough that the cost savings are worth the variance. For premium comfort or flight-like polish, look at ABC or GIGM. For getting somewhere on a tight budget without sacrificing safety, PMT is the answer.

💡 Insider Tips

  • On the Lagos→Enugu route, PMT is almost always cheapest — book the 7 AM departure to arrive Enugu by 4 PM.
  • Bring a hoodie for overnight routes — the AC, when it works, runs cold.
  • Ask at the counter about "executive" PMT units on flagship corridors — slightly newer fleet, marginal price premium.
  • PMT runs early-morning departures (4-5 AM) on most major routes — quietest and most punctual time slot.
  • Loyalty: the PMT Travel Card gives ₦200 off every trip after 5 bookings — pickup at any terminal for ₦500.
  • Long-haul Lagos→Maiduguri runs on PMT — book 5+ days ahead and bring snacks for the 18-22 hour journey.

↩️ Cancellation & Refund

Cancellation: Cancellation rules vary by operator. Most Nigerian bus operators allow cancellation up to 24 hours before departure with a small admin fee (₦500–₦2,000). Same-day cancellations may not be refundable.
