Travel Budget Calculator
Estimate the cost of your trip in Naira — accommodation, transport, food, activities, and miscellaneous.
What This Tool Does
The Travel Budget Calculator models the realistic total cost of a trip in Naira, broken down across the main spend categories (accommodation, food, transport, attractions, miscellaneous) with three pricing tiers (budget, mid-range, luxury). Pick your destination, duration, number of travellers and tier, and the tool produces a per-day and total trip estimate.
Budget planning is the single most under-prepared part of most Nigerian international trips. The published flight ticket is the visible cost; accommodation, food, ground transport, attractions and the foreign-exchange margin all stack up to typically 2–3× the flight cost for international travel. The calculator's job is to surface that full cost before you commit to the trip.
How to Use It
- Choose your destination from the dropdown — populated from our destinations database covering Nigeria, broader West Africa, the major Africa hubs, the Middle East gateways and the principal international destinations.
- Set your trip duration in days.
- Set traveller count (the tool handles solo, couple, family-of-four, group-of-six and custom).
- Pick your tier (budget, mid-range, luxury). Tier substantially affects accommodation and food spend more than transport or attractions.
- Review the per-day breakdown and total trip cost.
Tier Definitions
- Budget — guesthouses or 2-star hotels, street and casual restaurant food, public transport and ride-hail, free or low-fee attractions. Typically 30–50% below the mid-range tier.
- Mid-range — 3–4 star hotels, mix of casual and sit-down restaurants, mix of ride-hail and private transport, normal attraction admission fees. The default for most Nigerian business and family travellers.
- Luxury — 5-star hotels, fine-dining and premium restaurant spend, private transport throughout, premium attraction experiences. Typically 2–3× the mid-range tier.
What the Output Includes
- Accommodation — total room cost across the trip duration at typical mid-tier-for-tier rates for the destination.
- Food and drinks — three meals plus drinks per day, per traveller.
- Local transport — typical daily transport spend (airport transfers, intra-city movement, intercity hops).
- Attractions and activities — typical admission, tour and activity spend for the destination.
- Miscellaneous — SIM cards, tips, incidentals, shopping, entertainment.
- Grand total in NGN with per-day breakdown and per-traveller breakdown.
What's Excluded
The calculator focuses on the in-destination spend. It does not include:
- International flight cost — varies dramatically by season and booking timing; use the fare estimator separately.
- Visa application fees — covered separately by the visa eligibility checker.
- Travel insurance — typically 2–5% of total trip cost; add separately.
- Shopping/souvenirs — too variable to model; budget separately based on personal style.
- Per-trip incidentals beyond standard miscellaneous — celebrations, special activities, emergencies.
Using the Output
The budget total has two principal uses:
- Proof of funds for embassy visa applications. Most embassies require evidence that you can fund the trip without working in the destination. A documented budget — even a simple printout of the calculator's output — strengthens your visa application.
- Setting a foreign-currency target. Once you have a Naira total, use the currency converter to translate to the destination currency. That's your trip foreign-exchange target.
Common Questions
Are the numbers realistic? Yes — typical mid-tier costs verified against our destination cost-of-living data. For peak season (Christmas/New Year, summer in Europe, Hajj in Saudi Arabia) add 20–40%. Why is the luxury tier 3× the mid-range? Luxury accommodation and fine-dining spend scales aggressively; transport and attractions less so. The 3× ratio is typical. Can I save my budget? Currently no — results are session-only to keep the tool account-free. Take a screenshot before leaving the page. What about exchange-rate volatility? Calculator outputs are in NGN at current rates. If you fund the trip months in advance, FX moves can shift your effective cost — budget a 5–10% buffer for major-currency volatility.
