The Abuja to Kano corridor is the most-travelled Northern Nigerian inter-city route, connecting the federal capital with the historic commercial centre of Hausaland. The 425-kilometre journey runs north via Kaduna and Zaria — passing through the agricultural belt of Kaduna State and Northern Kaduna's rocky outcrops before entering Kano State and the urban approach to Kano City.

Standard travel time is 6-8 hours by direct bus and 5-7 hours by private car. The road is in moderate-to-good condition with substantial federal road rehabilitation completed 2018-2024. Kano's distinct climate (hotter and drier than Abuja in dry season; substantially less humid) becomes noticeable as the journey progresses northward.

God is Good Motors (GIGM) runs scheduled Abuja-Kano service from its Berger Junction terminal. Fare ₦10,000-16,000.

ABC Transport serves the corridor with daily departures. Fare ₦8,000-13,000.

Young Shall Grow Motors and Peace Mass Transit offer affordable service at ₦7,000-11,000.

Mini-bus market at Utako, Mararaba, and Nyanya parks in Abuja offers ₦6,000-9,000 fares with frequent departures.

Distance, duration and route structure

Abuja to Kaduna (190km, 2.5-3.5 hours) via Abuja-Kaduna Expressway. Kaduna to Zaria (80km, 1-1.5 hours) via the Northern Nigerian trunk road. Zaria to Kano (155km, 2-3 hours) via Funtua and Wudil approaching Kano City.

The Abuja-Kaduna highway saw security challenges 2018-2022 but has stabilised. Daytime travel is comfortable; overnight runs in convoy buses for safety.

Best times to travel

Daytime services (5am-7am Abuja departure, 12pm-3pm Kano arrival) are dominant. Overnight services exist but are less common given the route's modest length.

Alternatives to bus travel

Flight: Abuja (ABV) to Kano (KAN) on Air Peace, Max Air, or United Nigeria runs 50 minutes — ₦45,000-130,000 economy.

Train: The Abuja-Kaduna NRC standard gauge train (2hr 30min, ₦3,000-7,000) plus Kaduna-Kano onward bus is an option used by some travellers prioritising the Abuja-Kaduna safety upgrade.

What Kano offers

Kano is one of the oldest cities in West Africa with continuous settlement dating to before the 9th century. Top attractions: Kano Emir's Palace, Kurmi Market (one of the oldest markets in West Africa), Gidan Makama Museum, Kano City Walls heritage sites, Bayero University Kano campus, the Hausa cultural quarters of Sabon Gari and Fagge. The Durbar Festival (during Eid celebrations) is the most-spectacular cultural event drawing significant tourist traffic.
