Bauchi state — travel guide and destinations.

Bauchi State — gateway to Yankari National Park

Bauchi State is one of Nigeria's most-significant wildlife conservation destinations — host to Yankari National Park (Nigeria's premier wildlife reserve) and the Sumu Wildlife Park. The state has population around 6.5 million and covers approximately 45,837 km². Bauchi sits on the border between Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, hosting substantial Hausa-Fulani communities alongside dozens of Bauchi-specific ethnic groups.

The state's diverse ethnic composition includes Hausa-Fulani (the dominant linguistic group), Jarawa, Sayawa, Bolewa, Gerawa, and various smaller communities. The Bauchi cultural diversity creates substantial cultural tourism alongside the dominant wildlife conservation attraction.

Geography and climate

Bauchi State sits in the Sudan savannah at 580-1,200 metres elevation. The Jos Plateau extends into southern Bauchi creating substantial elevation variation. Climate is hot semi-arid — Harmattan (December-February) brings cool dust-haze; hot dry season (March-May) sees peak temperatures up to 40°C; rainy season June-September.
