The Abuja to Kaduna route — and why the train is now the preferred option

The Abuja to Kaduna corridor is unusual in modern Nigerian transport — it is one of the few inter-city routes where the standard gauge railway has materially displaced bus travel as the preferred mode. The Abuja-Kaduna Standard Gauge Railway opened to commercial service in July 2016 (the first standard gauge line in Nigeria) and offers a 2-hour 30-minute journey at ₦3,000-7,000 fares with dramatically better safety, comfort and predictability than the parallel highway.

The 190-kilometre road journey takes 2.5-3.5 hours by direct bus or private car. The Abuja-Kaduna Expressway is in good condition, but the route experienced significant security challenges 2018-2022 with kidnap-for-ransom incidents along the highway. The Nigeria Police, Nigeria Army and Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps have stabilised the security situation, but the train remains the safer choice for most travellers.

The train option — strongly recommended

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) operates daily Abuja-Kaduna services:

• Departure from Idu Station Abuja (10 minutes from Abuja CBD by taxi or Bolt)
• Arrival at Rigasa Station Kaduna (15 minutes from Kaduna city centre)
• Journey time: 2 hours 30 minutes
• Fares: ₦3,000 (standard), ₦5,000 (business class), ₦7,000 (first class)
• Multiple daily round-trip services typically 6am, 8am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm departures
• Book online at NRC e-ticket portal or at Idu/Rigasa station ticket offices

The train is comfortable, air-conditioned, on-time, and predictable. The single major caveat is booking — peak-period weekday services sell out 24-48 hours in advance. Book ahead during festive periods.

Bus operators on this route

For travellers preferring bus service:

God is Good Motors (GIGM), ABC Transport, and Peace Mass Transit run scheduled Abuja-Kaduna services. Fares ₦4,000-7,000.

Mini-bus market at Utako, Mararaba, and Nyanya parks offers ₦3,500-5,500 fares with frequent departures.

Bus travel during daylight hours is now safe; overnight travel is rare on this short corridor.

What Kaduna offers

Kaduna is one of the historic commercial and administrative centres of Northern Nigeria. Top attractions: Kaduna National Museum, Nigerian Defence Academy, Lord Lugard Hall (colonial heritage), Kajuru Castle (90km south, popular weekend retreat), Matsirga Waterfalls, Kaduna Polo Club, and the Trade Fair Complex.

The city is a major manufacturing centre with Peugeot Automobile Nigeria, Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, and significant agro-processing industries. Hotels including Asaa Pyramid Hotel, Hamdala Hotel, and Anchor Apartments support business travel.
